GMI Health Trainers

GMI Partnership Health Trainers are often the first point of contact for men on issues related to sexual health and HIV prevention.

So that we can reach the men we need to you will find us working in venues across London. These include bars, clubs, saunas, clinics and at special events such as UK Black Pride or World Aids Day. A calendar listing of venues across London where you can visit a Health Trainer is available by clicking here.

The role of the Health Trainer is really to work with you to decide how you want to manage your sexual health, helping you to have the kind of sex you want to have.
Reasons you might want to talk to a Health Trainer include:

  • You're worried about the risks you are taking in sex
  • You want more information about STIs and safer sex practices
  • You want to know about getting an HIV test – when you should get it, where you can have one done, and why you might want to test
  • You're wondering whether you might benefit from having another gay man as a mentor to help you work through ways that you can stay HIV negative
  • You have been considering counselling to talk about issues around your safer sex practices

How do Health Trainers work?
Health Trainers provide information on sexual health, risks, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
Health Trainers also offer you a 'life check'. Guided by a list of questions on issues related to sexual health and behaviour, GMI Partnership Health Trainers work with you to identify your level of knowledge around sexual health issues, the risks you may be taking and your needs for support.

An important part of the work of a Health Trainer is to also facilitate referrals to other services that you might be interested in.

  • We also offer Counselling and Mentoring programmes and Health Trainers can help you decide whether these services can assist you further.
  • Health Trainers can also signpost and refer you to services all across London – including groupwork, counselling, courses for those recently diagnosed as HIV+, clinics, testing services, and more. Health Trainers can help find services that meet your needs, at locations and times convenient to you.
